While many more works could be included, particularly from the authors of antiquity, I attempted to draw from authors across diverse time periods and to cover a breadth of history. For example, a disproportionate number of works detailed various aspects of Roman history, while relatively few cover the particulars of the medieval era. Hence, I overlooked many well-known authors of Roman history in favor of the lesser-known Huizinga to achieve a broad coverage of western history.
